The World

On July 17, 1983, a large section of Death Valley was replaced by an enormous fortress, surrounded by an army of undead, dragons, and other beings out of stories and legends. Led by the Archmage, this army conquered the Uniteed States west of the Rockies in a matter of weeks. In three years, they were on the verge of conquering the rest of the U.S. when when six humans with godlike powers appeared. With the help of a young woman named Tiara—one of the few Earth-humans who had mastered the Invaders' magic—the Six killed the Archmage and routed his armies.

Four decades later, the Six are long gone and the world has changed. Anomalies that defy the laws of physics appear; portals and rips between universes open, spilling forth anything from harmless glowing cats to invading mecha armies; and about one in nine-thousand teens in the US find themselves with an arcane mark.

Once you’re marked, you can’t do the things other kids get to. You can’t play sports. You can't even attend a regular school. Instead you have to attend The School, along with every other marked teen in the country. It's not all bad, though, being marked also gives you a super power.

The School

The initial manifestation of marks caused some panic in a populace still stunned from the Invasion and dealing with leftover anomalies and ongoing interdimensional incursions. Laws were passed to provide severely increased penalties for any crimes where a mark was involved. The newly formed Bureu of Metanormal Phenomena attempted to round up anyone with a mark. Tiara used her reputation from the Invasion (and possibly other methods, according to some rumors) to put. stop to that, instead proposing the creation of The School, where every teen with a mark would go, instead of to a regular school.
